About

Electrical engineering roots, full-stack systems work, and a habit of learning whatever the workflow needs next.

Overview

Greetings, visitor! My name is Sean Brown. This portfolio's purpose is to demonstrate practically my broad and diverse skillset, and I sincerely hope to bring value to your team and company. From electrical engineering to full-stack web development, I bring a unique skill set and passion for learning to every project.

I am an experienced Electrical Engineer and Full-Stack Web Developer with a passion for continuous learning and improving my skills to build bigger, faster, and better. Offering expertise in designing motor control centers, VFDs, control and instrumentation, and power transmission systems with a focus around hydropower and other renewables, as well as front-end and back-end web development, cybersecurity risk management, IT, and server administration. Always staying up-to-date with the latest technologies and constantly expanding skills to deliver efficient and effective solutions to complex problems.

A little about me. I graduated from Washington State University in 2015 with a degree in electrical engineering. For the next five years, I pursued a career in this field, gaining proficiency in engineering principles and technical expertise through experience designing industrial electrical systems for power generation, power transmission, instrumentation & controls, and large-scale heavy-duty industrial applications.

I am always seeking a creative outlet, however, so throughout those years I pursued learning programming in my spare time, both as a hobby I have a lot of passion for and a means of fostering career resilience. I was able to teach myself a variety of languages and frameworks in both front end and back end web development, through building a variety of projects you will find on this site alongside those developed professionally.

Following the advent of the Covid-19 lockdowns and engineering work subsequently drying up, it was these skills that enabled me to secure a remote job with an overseas company. A challenging role in which I am presently employed, I find the unique challenges rewarding day to day, and always hit the tutorials and documentation any time a gap in skills needed for a task.

How I Work

01

Understand the workflow

I trace the real sequence of work, the people involved, and the exceptions before choosing an interface or architecture.

02

Find the system boundaries

I map data contracts, dependencies, permissions, infrastructure, and failure modes so each part has a clear responsibility.

03

Build for repeated use

I favor dense, predictable tools with reusable modules, useful defaults, and room for the next workflow without a rewrite.

04

Validate the behavior

I test routes, responsive states, accessibility, data fallbacks, and the actual task a person needs to complete.

Toolbox

The useful part is not any one framework. It is being able to connect interfaces, services, data, infrastructure, and operations into one maintainable workflow.
